09 Jan 2009 : Latest news is coming that Satyam is thinking to layoff arround 10000 employee till feb 2009. There is no salary for another two months.

According to Times of india –

Satyam Computers, which has just started giving pink slips to its employees,  could potentially downsize its workforce by a whopping 4,500 employees.

This translates to a little less than 9% of the 51,000 employees that the company employs. Company sources say 1,500 employees have been put under the performance improvement plan (PIP), euphemism for employees put on watch list and asked to shape up or ship out. Apart from this, 3,000 others have not been given any increment in the last appraisal cycle, thereby indicating that their services are dispensable.

“This 1,500 plus 3,000 equals 4,500, which indicates the total number of persons who could be eased out of the company,” the source said.

On Friday, all employees received an e-mail from the company chief Ramalinga Raju warning them, especially the ones on the bench, to not bunk office and be in their best dress code, failing which they may face strict disciplinary action.

Last week, some 400 employees from across different locations were given the pink slip. Sources also indicated that after getting the message many among the 3,000 have also started leaving jobs. But an estimate of the employees who have left is not known.

A Satyam spokesperson said: “The bottom 5% of those who have got a bad appraisal are put under PIP and given dummy projects to prove themselves. If they fail they will be shown the door. But some of them marked for PIP said they have been given very little time to come up as winners.” However, even as it downsizes, Satyam continues to hire new employees in thousands. Over 40% of them are fresh blood just passing out of college.

The spectre of retrenchment is creating panic among employees of the company. “Of the 12 people working in my project, five were suddenly asked to resign, failing which, the company warned, it would fire us. Everything came without warning,” said a techie pleading anonymity.

    I dont think there would be any good news about IT industry by the end of this year. US cuts 84,000 jobs in the month of Aug2008 and they are continue to do it till this financial year. Fully 2.2 million Americans have lost their jobs in the past 12 months, as the unemployment rate has climbed from 4.7%. So far in 2008, firms have laid off 605,000 workers, with job losses averaging 76,000 a month. :(

    @Sandesh ,

    They have fired pepl irrespective of their experience. In the sense(according to them ;-) ), pepl who dint perform in the last 6-8 months have been given gatepass.

    All these Pepl dint get hike letter/appraisal remarks. Poor chaps dint think this as the indication for their lay-offs…

    Dont know how long this situation wud continue in IT.

    It is totally a figment of imagination by the Reporter. Its not at all truth, but the fact is that some of the people(less than 500) who has got less rating were kept on observation . They were undergoing PIP and the process of pink slips will follow that. So its totally a Imaginary Report

    This is all bull-shit!! Not correct at all….Satyam management is so-people savy and they are not even thinking about lay-offs, which of ‘absloute no need’ for the company with solid business plans in place.
    This is a rumour floated by time-passers who do not have anything else to do

    Recruiting freshers in thousands certainly gives a clear indication that the companies do not bother about quality. The only aim is cutting cost. If they send out a 6 or 7 yrs exp person they can easily recruit 3 freshers and a 2yr exp guy and complete the same job. One big factor for this is the IT companies have all enjoyed tax holidays for the past 8 yrs and this will be over in 2010. They will be needed to pay their taxes from 2010. So its always better to phase out people from now on, as these it tycoons are always proactive when its for their welfare. But when its the employee’s welfare they are always reactive. Another major reason is that the IT industry does not have an employees union like in the manufacturing industry so the employees are mere servents. Every clause in the offer letter re-instates that the employee has no hold on any aspect and can be fired anytime. And being a part of this industry has made me understand the raw facts. The image or aura of the IT industry to a common man gets smashed into pieces once the common man steps into this industry which is my case. Too late to regret. We need to learn to live in uncertainty.

    Confirmation appraisal at Satyam is still pending. One of the team which was working in the client location is now completely vanished not because of performance but ill-treatment from the management. If they are saying that they are putting associates on PIP because they are not performing well than its not 101% true. They are putting people who are on bench, many of them are on bench from past 1 year and all are freshers (what do you expect from them). Max of them are serving bond period (2years) so they cannot leave company otherwise they have to loose 2 lakhs (cash) which company has taken from them at the time of joining.(Great Shame!!!!). This is poor planning of company (managers)not the associates. You will find lots of non technical managers (people who are not technically fit in other companies since they are cheap so just recruit them) simply eating company earnings and doing nothing just satisfying there egos interns which effect actual working people performance and obviously salary. No doubt some of associates working in satyam are backbone of whole company.. but god knows how long they will be there… if you look things from outside you will find Satyam as a very very healthy company but internally its getting hollow ….

    When placed in projects people are crushed to work as huge hours make them fell sick and die with frustrastion.And provides short delivery dates, poor planning and resources.People remember nothing than work work work!!! Now Satyam cant pay the reward for their hardship. After all for whom did they work like that and who is the benefited from that.
    Simply play politics and say no performance and issue PIP and send them home.All the efforts are in vain.Just flushing water over one’s aspirations.Seems this is the best award in Satyam’s site.
    When on bench one’ll not get a chair to sit atleast. No resources.No software atleast to update techincally. Waste of time to attend the office.Simply wandering here and there!!
    Here starts the death of one’s career. and day by day forget all your experience.Hope satyam got the who is the cause for the death of one’s skill and knowledge!!
    Simply playing with the aspirations of thousands of employees.
    Removing experienced professionals is killing the Satyam itself!!
    Satyam will see the fruit of this!!

    Guys, Information is True.. Today i have seen one person who have worked in satyam for 3 years, is been called by exit department and sent off.

    He was in bench in for last 2 months.

    During the Exit interview, below are the reasons mentioned.

    1. Performance of CAP Results
    2. Was not attending the calls when called by resourcing team.

    Even in my project, last week we had a discussion with our managment and planned to downsize 12 resources from my account.

    Now I believe Its a organizational activity to release the resource from the project (Downsizing) put in bench and then sack.

    Should I join in IT Company?

    No, if you did not learn any programming languages and related subject. Companies will pay good offer with nice salary packages, but still don’t join with IT, until you are from some other stream. Automobile industries need talented Automobile Engineers; construction companies need good architects, Electronic world needs good designers and developers.

    Yes, other than IT companies all others give very less salary initially, but as you get experienced, you pay scale will go up. Because these industries and stable and maturate enough to move with Economic imbalance. IT is the new boost and failure in the new development system. Will give nice pay when the business and economy goes well and will cut job and salary (bones) when all go out of control.
    Because of the IT the Mortgage (“real estate” then best word) business went up, when it touched the sky, just collapsed. Now whole economic went down whole over the world. IT is not matured enough to cop with our Economy, as this industries is lead by companies with short term gain plans, very few companies has plane more than 10 years.
    This world needs good growth in Human health care, Energy production, Eco balance and Infrastructures. More our good Administrates for people and Teacher for students, so please come forward to opt these jobs also. Why most of the talented guys have to join with IT? Guys we needs you…as a talented doctor or administrators (IAS/IPS or as ministers)

    North Indians are very clever. 50% of the north indians come with fake certificates. But, they wont accept the fact and never leak the information. North Indians are very good at keeping this secret ( you will never come to know how close you are to them thatthey came with fake exp untill HR figures it out and send them out). 70% of the north indians come with no technical background and only know how to manage and screw up thing and save their ass at the time of crisis.

    I knew this was coming, Satyam has got the worst HR amongst all the top tier IT companies. I can challenge this in any forum with the kind of treatment they gave to me. They goofed up with my offer and later refused to abide by it. All they offered is apologies.

    NASSCOM asked me to approach the court which I did not do. I decided to move on and am doing well. But will always want to communicate this to as many people as possible.

    Months after this incident I got another offer from Satyam, this time around they sent this offer by mistake. After I highlighted this to their heads the email was withdrawn late in the evening.

    Moral of the story : If u get a offer from Satyam, verify it properly. Do not go through consultants etc. who claim to hire on behalf Satyam. Many freshers have been cheated by these consultants. Last but not the least, keep ur options open even after u accept the Satyam offer and join them, unless you would want to take them to court.

    Why such hue and cry about Satyam? Steria India Limited (earlier called Xansa India Limited) also fired 450 in February and March this year. Worst thing is that employees were called at Steria and asked to sign resignation, along with a request that they should be allowed to leave with immediate effect, and they were not allowedto even go back to their desk! They were not given a single penny and official stand taken was that these employees left on their own.

    To prove that this is right, a gentleman (?) called Mr Vikram Karayi, VP (HR), executed all this, at the behest of Mr Shantanu Banerjee (Director HR)! When organizations that claim to be so ‘ethical’ undertake such unethical and unprofessional actions, and don’t give a single penny to victims of their irrational behavior, no one raises voice (or even comes to know) – when Satyam retrenches people, and pays them compensation, there is such a large noise!

    These news all are true only. One of my friend who is now working in Satyam, Chennai. He recently switched from CTS to satyam. He told me, satyam firing peple as many as 100 persons per week. My friend’s friends have got fired. So. My friend scared being working in satyam. Now, he planned to move back to CTS. So, please people who are working in satyam. Please arrange same job for the future. Do not ignore guys.

    Hi,
    I work for satyam and have a bond for 2 yrs. I have completed 1 yr so far and have a quick question. what if i get laid off, will i get my experience certificate for the time i worked with them? And alos, i guess, i don’t have to pay any money to satyam b’cos it was not me who broke the bond but them? Please share your experiences?
    They also make people forcefully resign, in that scenario, will the candidate has to pay the bond money ?
    My personal feeling is, in either cases, candidates shouldn’t be asked for money.

    definitely you will get the experience letter . Company will pay you for your notice period watever it is . you wouldnt have to pay your bond money because doors will open from their side . If they force someone to resign ,in that case also they should not ask for any money . Satyam have some ethics and this layoff is just because of buisness condition . Dont think that it is related to your performance or anything. Be prepared your self , inhance your skill set …..it will help you to survive in this market . There should not be any panic after lay off .

    First of all to Mr.”employer” who is so frustrated with NORTH INDIANS…..WE ALL ARE INDIANS and still NORTH -SOUTH things never ends,,,,please come out of it…….

    1.We all stayed at a college for 2 days without any stay arrangement where recruitment was going on by Satyam in 2006 and it was 100 Km away from our home,
    written exam, GD, Technical interview, Bg check , and after 3-4 months we got our letter.

    I agree that you could have found people with fake exp but I disagree that the count is 70% because in 3rd year or final yea the hiring starts and at that time students only have their training exp certifiactes.and for Exp employee ,if he/she has done that then I agree it is wrong.

    2. This is 500% true that satyam had laid out more than 5000 employees and the number is increasing:
    (More of them are either North Indians or AP people, what about others???)

    reasons/excuses are:

    1.Performance (Look that is really not a fault of an employee who sits and wait for the project to come so that he/she can work and learn): Internal projects should continue so that Performance Exam is not required.Encourage people on bench to sit for certifiactions so that you can use them directly instead of teaching them!!!!!!!!!

    Also for 4-6 years exp people WHAT performance related exam they conduct…………….I believe CERTIFICATION is better option WHICH CAN SHAPE UP someone’1 future also.

    2.Fake Bills (What these people were doing when they did verification of bills and paid the amount after long time : now after so many years they got up saying these bills are not true and they will terminate people , WERE these people sleeping when they cleared bills after verification ?

    IF THEY WOULD HAVE cleared this at the starting the associates who are in mess after so many years without any exp letter ,WOULD HAVE TRIED SOMEWHERE ELSE OR FOR HIGHER STUDIES.NOW after 2 years what people will do without exp letter and that also if a person once getting terminated tries to get a job in some other company then for BG check satyam says that they have terminated the employee……..Atleast DONT PLAY WITH LIFE OF OTHERS IF YOU CANNOT AFFORD THEM to work.Let them pay the expenses and resign.

    3. Work for 18 hours to23 hours a week day for satyam plus 10-12 months weekends (which is strictly againt law) but when satyam will feel like they cannot afford you , they wont give you option to resign they will terminate you keeping your salary and exp letter.without apprecaiting that you worked so hard for them.

    4. The info which I have collected from my freinds is that satyam has disabled the option to resign in their online portal so that when the employee will contact Hr for resigantion , and TERMINATION WILL BE FORCED ON HIM/HER which is really against law. NO one can force termiantion on their employees.

    5. If this is really a market problem then let employees resign after paying the dues and dont play with their future and lives.

    6.Infosys has sent its employees for long holiday + half salary so that once market will be up they can use the resources, and also in Sept 2008 Infy has increased the employee strength of more than 1 lakh. WOW (atleast no betrayal)

    7. I would like to reuqest people to understand the family conditions of the employees , if you cannot afford atleast tell them clearly and let them resign instead of spoiling their future

    3.Employee called HR for status:And the status was tomorrow is your last day………..that also with in rude way….as if employee never existed for them….and murdered someone….

    4.Mail not working:contact HR: Today is your last day in satyam……

    and this happened with our seniors and batchmates…….

    the count is still going on ……as they ARE FORCING TERMINATION ON PPL………by vlcking their resignation options…..

    They(HR) called off and says ‘Today is your last day in satyam.
    In satyam project recruitement also inside influence needed.U have influence is there u will survive in satyam.
    Some of them HR say u r wearing casual dress(JEAN) so we layoff you…
    NO ETHCS…No professionalism…..ALL SATYAM WAY is in Namesake in book and site only

    Yesterday ny friend got relocated to chennai and her Family (In laws are in HYD) and her friend whose In laws are in chennai is suppose to stay in Hyd ….WOW…

    and when they requested their Leads they were ask to leave for chennai or job…..

    Its funny to see IT guys complaining about how they get treated unfairly!!! Imagine when the same ppl attend interviews, expect to get 30% – 50% raises, want every single perk available on the planet, bully management for middle-of-the-year raises when projects are going on and then quit during the middle of the project without any conscience. Don’t complain – its time the IT employees begin to feel the fear, the one that they are the reason for.

    I think its media’s fault now that they r making hype of this internal matter….HR’s were firing like ppl like anything for 100 Rs also now what?

    We live in democratic world….we need a TRUE and PROPER answer that what could be the REAL reason?

    Would appreciate the early reply as so many people have to answer their family that they will not get salary or job now….

    Also I would like to request all the Indian IT giants other than Satyam..plz dont interfere in our satyam’s life.we olready are in great shock….and with your comments to media it would get tough for us to come out of this situation or look out for another job.

    To all of you who think its a rumour,

    Do we really care its a rumour? I mean, isn’t there a possibility. If you owned a company and this happened, what are the possibilities that you would save your ass by cutting down your costs. Or would you still go around saying you are employee friendly? Friend, like someone else almost pointed out, this is Business. No one needs to be loyal to anyone. I understand that reporters do go overboard in the numbers department, but the move (regardless of whether it happened or not) is a possibility, and a scary one at that. But then again, there is nothing to complain. As an employee, do your job, demand your pay, spend it wisely. As an employer, find your clients, improve your business. Be at peace.

    To someone who found regionalism in this,

    Please get a life, else join politics.

    If there are ‘real’ employers reading,

    Regardless of what I said above, this is India. And people here are emotional and do not take it practically even when someone calls them to a meeting room and tells them they have potential but not working up to par. They just take it too personally. So device better methods for sending off employees here. Our HR apes the methodologies of the west, and that will never work.

    And finally,

    IT in india is like a kid who grew up playing on his XBOX and got pampered too much by his parents. Unlike the previous generation (where the kid got toys only on festivals and felt that he earnt it). Pardon my quick and dirty analogy, but all this seems so catastrophic because we all joined hands and created this scenario. Things will change. Be positive. There is life before and after IT.

    If satyam can bull shit about its financials it makes you wonder if Infosys and Wipro did the same. Chances are they did to some extent. I am betting that there will be more revelations later this year. Our sourcing business in India is finished.

    State farm, a major customer of Satyam just ditched them.
    State farm provides 1/3rd of the business of Satyam. This company is going down fast. Engineers should take the computers and chairs/tables home. There will be no pay check for January/February for sure. Take the plants and the refrigerator too.

    Hi… I am happy b’cos of Layoffs… Every individual is running to IT Industry from last 2years.. Layoffs is the Best Lessen for the people who are studying in Academic year.. At least they can go for any other field… :)

    Hi all,

    Firing people is tough situation for all IT companies n tht includes satyam also. Those who hv joined IT industry and work passionately, they need not to worry about layoffs n those who hv just joined it as another job n r nt doing nythng other than cursing the organization then they will be fired sooner or later. Life always gives u ample oppourtunities to work hard n acheive watever u want in ur life. Satyam has put people ( freshers ) on bench from the past 1 yr., but it hasnt been done intensionally. No good human being wants to harass others.
